History
Over a Century of Faith and Learning
Established on January 21, 1884, by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, St Joseph’s School, Glen Innes began with approximately 30 students. Today, it is a thriving co-educational primary school, serving around 160 students from Kindergarten to Year 6.
Located in the heart of Glen Innes, on spacious grounds shared with the Catholic Church, Parish Hall, and Presbytery, our school provides a welcoming and engaging environment. The solid brick buildings have undergone recent upgrades, ensuring modern learning spaces for all key learning areas.
Growth, Change, and a Legacy of Innovation
Initially a day school with boarding facilities soon added, St Joseph’s has evolved significantly. The school moved into the old Church building in 1909, following the construction of the current church. Building expansions over the years included a two-storey block in 1926 and an Infants’ building in 1960.
The 1960s marked a period of transformation, with the introduction of lay teachers and the Wyndham Scheme. The addition of a Science block in 1965 paved the way for St Joseph’s College, a secondary school that opened in 1969. The boarding school closed in 1978.
A Legacy of Service, A Vision for the Future
Further developments in the late 20th century included the remodelling of the old Science block for a Kindergarten room (1980), the addition of an Art Room (1990), and extensions to the Technics building (1997). In 1988, the college and primary school amalgamated, before the secondary department closed in 2001.
The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart played a vital role in the school’s history, serving from 1884 to 1995, and again from 2006 to 2010.
